clutch going out...

what is a sign that the clutch is going out? i went racing at barona feb 2nd for the rain delay race and i took a few runs and i started smelling clutch when i popped the hood. it wasnt smoking or anything but my ETs were not where they were when i raced previously. also if it is bad how bad is it to replace if it is bad?
