Command Sergeant Major Van Patten was born in Los Angeles, California on September 11, 1957. He enlisted in the U.S. Army in October 1974, as a Chemical Equipment Repairman. He holds an Associate Degree from Pikes Peak Community College and exceeded course standards of the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Course.
His military education includes: Distinguished Graduate Chemical Advanced Non Commissioned Course; Distinguished Graduate Advanced Individual Training; the III Corps Non Commissioned Officer Academy; the U.S. Army Sergeants Major Academy - First Sergeants and Command Sergeant Major Courses and Master Fitness Trainer Course. He has completed over 1200 hours of correspondence studies, including: the Non Commissioned Officer Logistics Program, the Mechanical Maintenance Supervisor Course, the Battalion Intelligence, the Operations Sergeant Course, and the Civillian Personnel Supervisor Course.
CSM Van Patten has held a variety of leadership and staff positions including nominative assighnments for General Officers at the Major General and Brigadier General levels. Most recently he served as the 7th Chemical Corps Regimental and Chemical School Command Sergeant Major, Maneuver Support Center - Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. His previous assignment was the Command Sergeant Major 100th Area Support Group, Grafenwoehr, Germany. His awards and decorations include the Legion of Merit (3 OLC), the Bronze Star, the Meritorious Service Medal (4 OLC), the Army Commendation Medal (4 OLC), the Army Achievement Medal (4 OLC), the Southwest Asia Service Medal (3 Bronze Stars), the Kuwait Liberation Medals, the Valorous Unit Award, the Army Superior Unit Award, the German Marksmanship Badge in Bronze and the Driver's Badge for Track and Wheeled Vehicles.
CSM Van Patten was seleted as the 2nd Armored Division Noncommissioned Officer of the Quarter (April-June 1979), the 2nd Armored Cavalry Regiment Senior Noncommissioned Officer of the Year for 1991 and is a member of the prestigious Sergeant Morales and Audie Murphy Clubs. He was selected as the 7th Chemical Corps Regimental Command Sergeant Major by Major General Ralph G. Wooten. He has the Armor Order of St. George and the Chemical Order of the Dragon.
His wife, Carmen and two sons, James IV and Calvin reside with him at Grafenwoehr, Germany.
