Grinding 3rd Gear

I got a 91 with the T-5 and when I shift into 3rd it'll grind unless I feather it. When I downshit it goes into gear just fine. What type of rebuild do you think that I have to do? Also, I have a spare T-5 but I am not sure if it is good. Is there a way to tell if it is good without tearing it apart?
